Social Science STD 6 Chapter 11: Landforms - Exercises

1. Answer the following questions:
  • 1. What is meant by landform?
A landform is a particular part of the Earth's surface that has a certain height, slope, and shape. It is created and changed by movements in the Earth's crust and natural forces like rivers, glaciers, and wind.
  • 2. What is meant by Mountain? Which are its main types?
A mountain is an area with a height of more than 900 meters above sea level, characterized by a gentle or abrupt slope. The main types of mountains, based on their formation process, are Fold mountains, Block mountains, Volcanic mountains, and Residual mountains.
  • 3. Differentiate between Mountain and Plateau.
    Mountain Plateau

    1. A mountain is an area with a height of more than 900 meters above sea level.

    2. Mountains have steep or abrupt slopes and often a conical peak.

    3. They are formed by forces like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

    1. A plateau is a land part with a height of more than 180 meters above sea level.

    2. Plateaus have a wide and flat surface on top.

    3. They are formed by geological movements or the cooling of magma.

2. Fill in the blank selecting the correct option:
  • 1. Satpura of India is ........ type of mountain.
    Answer: (B) Block mountain
  • 2. Piece of land surrounded by mountain ranges from all four sides is called ........ plateau.
    Answer: (A) Intermontane
  • 3. Flat piece of land having average ........ height from sea level is called plain.
Answer: (D) Approximately up to 180 mts.
  • 4. Huang ho plain is a ........ type of plain.
    Answer: (B) depositional
3. Recognize me:
  • 1. I am surrounded by the land from three sides
    Answer: Gulf
  • 2. My end extends out into the sea up to a certain extent
    Answer: Cape
  • 3. I am known as an Island
Answer: A piece of land surrounded by water from all four sides
  • 4. I connect two water areas
    Answer: Strait
  • 5. I have a sea on my three sides and land on one side
    Answer: Peninsula
4. Write Short Note:
  • 1. Block Mountain
Block mountains are formed when geological forces cause a pulling force on the Earth's surface, creating cracks. The surrounding area submerges, and the central part remains stable, forming a block-like structure. The lower areas form gorges. The Horst Mountain in Germany and the Nilgiri, Satpura, and Vindhyachal mountains in India are examples of block mountains.
  • 2. Importance of Plateau
Plateaus are important because their lavaic soil is very fertile and suitable for growing crops like cotton. They are also rich in valuable minerals such as iron, manganese, and gold, which are found in their ancient solid rocks. The slopes of plateaus are useful for cattle rearing, tourism, and film industries.
  • 3. Depositional Plain
Depositional plains are formed by the deposition of alluvium carried by natural agents like rivers, glaciers, and wind. These plains are also known as 'Riverine plains'. Examples include the plains of the Ganga-Yamuna in India, the Huang ho plain in North China, and the Lombardy plain in Italy. When alluvium is deposited in lakes, they are called 'Lake fields,' like the Kashmiri valley.
  • 4. Importance of Plain
Plains are crucial for human habitation and trade because their flat, fertile land is ideal for agriculture, which provides raw materials for industries. They are also useful for the construction of road and rail routes. Cities with a high population density are typically located on plains due to these favorable conditions.
